Siemens Energy is delivering the Converter Stations for the Celtic Interconnector, a major energy infrastructure project connecting the electricity grids of Ireland and France for transmission system operators EirGrid and RTE, with part funding from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility.
With a transient workforce and high-risk activities including marine transport, heavy civils and the installation of two 240-tonne transformers, maintaining live visibility of worker certifications and competencies was critical. However, training and compliance records were spread across subcontractors, spreadsheets, inboxes and paper files.
A review of historic incident and near-miss data highlighted a recurring challenge: visibility. Siemens Energy needed to move beyond paper-based compliance checks and create a more reliable way to verify competency information at the point of work.
HSI Donesafe provided a configurable platform aligned to Siemens Energy’s competency framework, automating competency management and integrating with site access controls. This enabled workforce readiness to be managed consistently, efficiently and at scale across the project.
Workers can now complete most induction requirements before arrival, reducing orientation time by more than 75%, from up to four hours to around 50 minutes on average. Competency can also be verified before workers enter site, removing manual gate checks and reducing the risk of expired qualifications going unnoticed.
Automated notifications now alert workers and the EHS team when certifications are approaching expiry, providing a live view of workforce readiness and reducing the administrative burden of manual tracking.
The project has achieved more than 500,000 LTI-free hours across 23 months, with zero Lost Time Incidents and zero Medical Treatment Cases. Siemens Energy has moved from retrospective compliance management to real-time competency assurance, helping ensure only authorised, qualified and compliant workers can access site and carry out critical activities.
